Pool Closing and Winterizing

Pool Closing and Winterizing

When is the best time to close your pool?

It depends on the weather, or if you have lots of trees or other factors. Some pool lovers would stretch the closing until the weather report states that snow is coming. Ideally, most pools are closed between labour day and the week of Thanksgiving. By the end of October all outdoor pools are closed. You want to avoid the temperature dropping below 70 degrees.

Maintaining your pool water chemistry throughout the season and right up to closing day will make the process a lot easier. When your pool is closed with cleaned and balanced water, and an appropriate amount of sanitizer and algaecide (Which should last 4 to 5 months) you would have a better opening.

What is involved

  • We clean and vacuum the pool before closing
  • We test the pool water, add and balance the winterizing chemicals
  • Lower the pool water level – to avoid freeze damage and overflowing
  • Backwash and clean the filters, cartridges and pump
  • Blow out all water from the lines, filter and pump
  • We remove chlorinators – including salt chlorinator
  • We check that the heater is flipped off and the gas
  • We remove any pool accessories and store them away
  • Lastly we install your pool cover or cover the pool with your tarp and water bags
