Pool Opening

Pool owners usually like their pool open by Victoria Day weekend, which is the third weekend of May. The opening period mostly starts from the end of April, (depending on the weather) and finishes by mid-June. Some pool owners with lots of trees surrounding the pool, would rather open later than sooner in the season to avoid the falling leaves and acorns which may clog the filter.

Typically, the pool opening is done in two or three phases, depending on the condition of the pool at the time of opening. Sometimes we are faced with a green pool or perhaps structural issues or maybe even equipment failure. Whatever the issue, it has to be dealt with before the opening can be completed.

What’s involved in a pool opening

• Clean off leaves and debris from the pool cover and water bags
• Clean cover and water bags – then store away until closing time
• Skim the debris from the pool surface
• Remove the plugs (They would have been used after blowing the lines at closing)
• Reinstall pool features such as, steps, ladder diving board, etc.
• Add make-up water – there may be some water lost over the winter
• Connecting the pump and filter – clean filter cartridges if needed or change the sand.
• Test the pool water, add what chemicals are needed, then balance the water chemistry
• Vacuuming the pool
